Merry Christmas Advent…ure (December 21)

Let the children sing and shout
Let the silver bells ring out
As a long night fades away
Into the light of Christmas Day

Alison krauss & Robert Plant

Oh man, down to the last ten songs, as we march towards Christmas Day.

Both songs 41 and 42 take me to that time as a kid when the hours before Christmas morning would not move fast enough. When you could not fall asleep fast enough because your mind was racing with the possibilities of what was to come in the morning.

Not unlike the night before every round of golf.

The Light of Christmas Day by Alison Krauss & Robert Plant

Another of the recent discovery songs. So cool to hear Robert Plant in this style. And Alison Krauss is just fantastic. Her song “Down to the River to Pray” is one I remember Kate asking me to play, but she was so little she didn’t know the words. That song is on the “O’ Brother Where Art Thou” soundtrack which is one of my favorite albums.

I just remember Kate and I trying to work through her: “You know dad, the water song”?!? She was so cute and then we shared a fun laugh when I figured out what song she was asking about. So it was cool to tell Kate this song is from the same singer.

Let Me Sleep (It’s Christmas Time) by Pearl Jam

Eddie about sums it up.

Just let me sleep. Santa is coming.

ALL of us remember that feeling.

Most Christmases, I don’t rush to bed with the same goal to sleep as fast as possible. Mostly because “Santa” has to put the little trampoline together, and “Santa” probably should have skipped the last Bailey’s before picking up an Allen wrench at 1:00 AM!

My girls definitely have the “straight to jams, straight to bed, straight to Santa” energy on Christmas night. Hilariously, they are 100% ThisDads kids and just sleep right through the new sun alarm clock. Then sleep through the regular alarm clocks. Then sleep through 80% of breakfast prep and Christmas morning music.

There were definitely a few up-at-dawn Christmases of my youth, but many more, “Merry Christmas, YOU BOYS AWAKE” mornings growing up.

Circle of life.

Up at dawn, or sleep till 10:00. I just want the magic-morning-Christmas-faces. Not sure how many of the Ted Lasso BELIEVE mornings I have left with the girls. Just want to make sure to treasure the ones I get.

Thanks for reading. See you tomorrow.
